Clay jars, amber wine and 8,000 years of tradition.
Archaeologists have found traces of wine in pottery from southern Georgia dating to around 6000 BC — some of the oldest evidence of winemaking anywhere.
The qvevri
Traditional Georgian wine is fermented and aged in qvevri: large egg-shaped clay vessels buried in the ground. The method is inscribed on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Amber wine
White grapes like Rkatsiteli are often fermented with their skins, producing “amber” wine — deep in colour, with the grip of a red. Saperavi is the great red grape, inky and bold.
