In the 19th century, Sololaki was where Tbilisi’s wealthy merchants built their houses: tall façades, cast-iron balconies and grand entrance halls, called sadarbazo.

Many entrance halls still have painted ceilings, marble floors and sweeping staircases. They are part of people’s homes — step in quietly and don’t linger.
The Writers’ House
On Machabeli Street, the Art Nouveau mansion built for brandy-maker David Sarajishvili is now the Writers’ House of Georgia, with a garden restaurant.
Finish by climbing the stairs to the Sololaki ridge and Kartlis Deda as the city lights come on.
